Don't you wish you were hip like this?
This girl has some natural groove going on... she sure knows how to shake her booty, and her fashion sense is uncanny ;-) I believe that she is doing her thing to "Gold digger" in this photo (thank goodness she doesn't repeat the lyrics!).
Yesterday, this little ballerina had her dance class at the Ballet Studio in the city. She was thrilled to dance in a real studio, with bars & mirrors. She loved the costume room and the shoe room, and she was so excited the whole morning! She was also excited to go for lunch with her friend (and moms of course). What a great girls' day!
Everyone has been having fun reading "Captain Underpants" books before bed (you'll notice our temporary, mid-renovation sleeping arrangements in the photo). I'm not sure who finds these books funnier... kids or dad ;-)
Things have been going pretty well these days. L is learning to read, although she resists reading to me that often, especially if she's tired. It seems like she's self-conscious about making mistakes. It probably doesn't help that she's heard her brother reading fluently for her entire life. She is growing like a weed! She can still be pretty grumpy at times, and will storm to her room where she'll sulk and cry for awhile when she's upset. She also really likes to be helpful these days, and will put on her best manners if we pretend that we're eating in a restaurant ;-)
M has been incredibly talkative, and definitely been showing signs of attitude lately. She's never been as committed to pushing boundaries as her big sister though. This one just doesn't lose control, even when she appears to be throwing a fit. She knows exactly what she's doing, and she's just seeing if it will work. She loves to sing, make up stories, and be silly. She loves being read to, still loves cuddles, and still loves her soo-soo, giraffe-ey, and star blankie (the first child we've had to be SO attached to some comfort objects).
G is back to his regular self. He's been playing really well with his sisters (well, all siblings do get annoyed with each other from time to time), and has been a happy guy lately. We've been gluten, casein, and (mostly) sugar-free for almost a year now, and making that change has been completely life-changing. It's not a chore or all that inconvenient anymore. We've figured out how to manage restaurants, what are good substitutes for snacks, and how to make some special occasion foods (e.g. birthday cake) that doesn't throw his body for a loop. We're still giving him a range of natural supplements, and they have also been worth the expense. In the past year, he's been sick only one time. That is incredible for this boy!

Renovations
We ended Christmas holidays by getting ready for some renovations. The preparations had kind of a domino effect. To make room for G and L to sleep upstairs (the temporary arrangement during renovations), we needed to clean out all of M's "baby" furniture. To get their room cleaned out, we needed to clean out other spaces.... and then we needed to demolish the laundry room. Ugh.
G and L have been sharing a room for the past three years. For the most part, this has worked really well. During the school year, they are really happy to have some extra time together. During the summer holidays though, it isn't such a great idea. When they are together 24/7, having to sleep in the same room can prove to be a little much. So, we've decided to do some renovations so that everyone has their own room. Earlier this fall, we bought a new front loading washer and dryer that we had stacked and installed in our utility room. That freed up a huge laundry room to be converted into another bedroom for L, right across the hall from G. At this point, a new wall has been constructed, giving room for a closet and more floor space. The walls have been painted. L was very excited to choose the color herself. Of course, she chose PINK... "Early Sunrise" to be precise. She had fun helping us paint for about 5 minutes :-) Then she grabbed the camera and started taking pictures instead. Today ceiling panels, doors, and closet doors were installed throughout the basement. Now, we'll need to wait for carpet to be installed. Then M's new furniture can be delivered, and everyone can get moved into their own bedrooms.
During the renovation, everyone has been sleeping upstairs. G and L have been sharing M's room, and M has been sleeping in our room. Needless to say, this has caused some disruption, and we've ended up with at least one child in our bed most nights. It's been kind of fun for the kids though.

Christmas
G's last day of school was "his best day of school ever!" He was so thrilled to receive a Blokus game from his two special EAs, and very excited to meet Mr. F, from the high school. G got to bring a Math 9 book home for the holidays, and was very excited to hear that he would be able to go to the high school after the holidays to begin learning some new math. It has been a journey for both us and the staff at his elementary school to decide how to support his growth in this area of strength. Before Christmas, the resource teacher did some assessments to figure out if his math abilities demonstrate conceptual understanding, or just calculating ability. This was the first step in determining what is appropriate education for G in math. We weren't terribly surprised to hear that he flew through the entire assessment (which assesses number sense up to around the grade 9 level), but it left us a little puzzled about what to do next. So, we met with the Resource Teacher from the high school and talked about possibilities. It turns out that Mr. F. from the high school was interested in meeting G to figure out where he's at, and to determine what his "instructional level" will be. Since then, they've met one more time, and G has learned some new math. G is sometimes choosing to work on his Grade 9 math during his school day, when his peers are doing math that he already knows, and occasionally he's even experiencing some frustration and has been generating questions for Mr. F. I'm so grateful that there are people willing to think outside of the box to support G's learning!
Christmas holidays began with a trip to Grand Forks to pick Grandma and Grandpa up from the airport. The kids were very excited, and a delay in their flight meant we even had time to eat supper :-) When Grandma and Grandpa walked through the gate, the kids had a LOT of hugs for them, and so many things to tell them. We were all so happy that they were home for the holidays! At the beginning of the week, we took a trip to the city together. Grandma and Grandpa took the kids to Build-A-Bear as one of their Christmas gifts. Everyone had so much fun, and the kids have played with their new stuffies a LOT! It's been so cool to see them engaged in imaginative role-playing with their stuffies :-)
On Christmas Eve, we had Christmas with the other Grandma and Grandpa. We had a big brunch, opened presents, had naps, played, and had a fish fry for supper. G loved his microscope, L was thrilled with her sleeping bag, and M put her new pj's on right away (and pushed her stroller around non-stop). It was beginning to storm during the day, so Grandma and Grandpa decided to go home after supper and we went to Church. After church, we put out some gluten-free peanut butter chocolate chip cookies and pink milk for Santa, and went to bed :-)
On Christmas morning, everyone was up bright and early, excited to see that Santa had eaten his snack, left some gifts, and filled stockings. This was the first year that the kids really tore through opening their presents :-) We spent a good part of the day putting new Playmobil toys together. The kids have just loved the Castle that Santa left for L, and have spent tons of time playing with it. M was thrilled to get more Geotrax, and G was over the moon about his DS. He has spent a lot of time cheering me on as I earn Power Stars for him in Super Mario 64. Both sets of grandparents had planned to come for brunch, but a storm meant that only one set made it (after getting stuck a few times). We made waffles for brunch, put together toys, played, and finally watched a movie to have some down time as it was beginning to get dark. It was a great day!
On the 26th, we celebrated Christmas with my parents. They came over in the morning to make crackles and open gifts. They we loaded up our vehicles and went to a nearby hotel for a day of swimming, and for the night. Unfortunately the pool heater was broken (or turned off), so we did all of our swimming in the hot tub :-) The kids really didn't seem to mind at all, and we all had a good time together. It's amazing how a few busy days tire everyone out though... we both fell asleep lying down to help the kids fall asleep at bedtime. I'm sure Grandma and Grandpa were hoping for some kid-free visiting time to play cards, but we went to sleep on them instead. The next morning we did some more swimming, then went home. The following day, it was time to take grandma and grandpa back to the airport. The visit sure went fast, and we all miss them already! G is counting down the days, and L gets a little sad sometimes about missing them.
The rest of the holidays flew by! With new toys in the house, everyone played SO nicely. Ralph was on holidays, so we just hung out, played, and got the house ready for more renovations. We spent New Year's Eve with another family, and we had a blast! We made Prime Rib for supper, and then the kids played like crazy! G and M put themselves to bed shortly before midnight, but L was up until after 1:00 a.m., when our guests went home. Needless to say, the next day was pretty low key!
Our holiday was so great this year, that it was pretty hard for everyone to want to go back to school and daycare. We're back in the routine of regular life, and still enjoying the new toys.

Another proud moment!
L has been doing so well in Kindergarten, and it was so cool to see her at her finest during her Kindergarten party! The party began with a program. The class sang a few songs, did some finger plays, and recited some poems. L did SO well, remembering all the words and actions, and being her usual expressive self!
She was so proud to be dressed in her fancy Christmas dress, to serve us snacks after the party, and to show us all her favourite centres. After the program, we did a whole bunch of activities together. She was very proud of the cookies she had helped make, and especially enjoyed playing at the listening centre, where we took turns closing our eyes and trying to identify the bells that she rang.
Another Christmas Program
G had so much anxiety this year over the Christmas program. After being sick, things just weren't going as well at school, and things were a lot harder for him than they had been earlier this year. To start, the concert was scheduled to begin at 7:45, which is only 15 minutes before bedtime. After a few discussions about how the Christmas season means that we sometimes eat and go to bed at different times, G seemed to be okay with the idea of going to bed "way after bedtime." The biggest problem though was one song that he just could NOT do. Most kids in grade 2 find it pretty funny, but for G, "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth," is like telling a blatant lie, and telling a blatant lie is just wrong. Besides, what if Santa thinks it's true?!? He would get so upset when it was time to sing the song during music class that he would bolt from the room, cry, get mad, and basically just lose it. So, he and his music teacher decided that he just wouldn't sing the song. I am so grateful for the kind way that his teachers handled his worries. For the first time in 30 years, the music teacher changed the order of the concert... just so that G could be a part of it without being totally overwrought! Together, G and Mrs. H decided to put the song we don't name right before the time that G's class would go onto the stage for their reader's theatre, they prepared the program together, and it all seemed much better. G was still convinced that he didn't want to go to school at all on the day of the concert, but he decided that he could give it a try.
On the night of the concert, I couldn't have been a prouder mom! G marched onto the bleachers with everyone else, searched the crowd for us, and gave us a whole bunch of waves. Then he sang his heart out! Just before "the song" was about to start, he ducked down and zipped out. Most people didn't even notice, and he was ready to go on stage with his class.
We all enjoyed the concert, and were so proud! L had a blast taking a lot of pictures with our camera, and even managed to take a few that were in focus.
Church Program
I think that we had the best Sunday School program ever this December! As is the tradition, the program began with prelude music from the children. G asked Allison if she would play a duet with him, and she said yes (very graciously). It was really cute when he counted her in, and so great that he was able to play with her in perfect time without a single rehearsal!
L and M are in the Pre-school/Kindergarten class this year. They loved their costumes, and they both remembered their lines for their poem and said them so nicely into the microphone. G had more lines to remember this year, and it was no problem. He did a great job on the stage!
When did this happen?
On most days, she is still "my baby." She turned three in November, but I still really don't have a problem with her having a soo-soo, with carrying her a lot of the time, and with lots of snuggles with her special blankie. Then I see pictures like these, and I realize that she is growing up (quicker than I'd like?). I don't know if she's lucky or unlucky to be "the baby" in the family... and she'll probably spend a lot of her future wishing that we could just remember that she isn't "a baby" anymore. For now, though, I think I'll just keep on kissing those chubby little cheeks, wiggling her cute little toes, and giving her as many snuggles as she'll take.
Thank you, Kerri, for these beautiful photos!
