Some days are better than others

Today was one of those days... one of those days when I can tell that an upcoming change is causing anxiety for this little guy...one of those days when my heart breaks that I can't take away the things that cause his worries, and his difficulty in coping with them. These tears started when Daddy told him that he'd broken a rule in baseball by running outside of the baseline. Most days, that wouldn't be too big of a deal... but we didn't realize this wasn't going to be one of those days, until the tears started to flow. It looks like we've begun the cycle that comes with big changes. School will be starting in just over a week, one of his best friends just moved away, and I'll be back at work this week. It's easy to forget, in between these times, just how difficult these changes are for him, and what that means for how he deals with the ups and downs of daily life. Even though we can predict when he's going to be more anxious, it really doesn't get a whole lot easier. We've learned that we'll get through it. We've learned how to comfort him, and how to help him cope with his anxiety... but it breaks my heart every time. Be strong little guy... we love you, we'll be there for you.

Happy Birthday sweet girl!

She's four years old today! I can't believe it. It feels like just yesterday that she came into this world, at breakneck speed...and she hasn't slowed down yet.

At four years old:
*she's a drama queen
*she's incredibly animated
*she hears absolutely everything (especially things I wish she wouldn't hear...and then she repeats them)
*she has a very vivid imagination
*she loves to be with her friends
*she can be a little (okay, sometimes a lot) bossy
*she can be incredibly lovable and cuddly
*she needs her mommy when she's sad or hurt
*she can cry like nobody's business
*she still throws the odd tantrum to try and get her way, but she's learning who's really in charge ;-)
*she loves Princesses, Dora, and everything pink
*she loves to choose her own clothes
*she would wear her princess dress-up clothes (thank you Auntie Allison!) everywhere, every day
*she jumps into her mommy's lap when she's frightened during a movie, wants to turn it off, or says she needs to go pee (and she frightens easily)
*she loves her brother like crazy, and also fights with him like crazy
*she is super cute
*she is smart
*she knows her ABCs, can count, and is learning new things every day
*she loves to be read to

She had a birthday party with friends on Friday, and had a LOT of fun! It was a little crazy at times, but all of the kids had a great time...and they even ate something other than chips and cake ;-) Today, we celebrated with our families. She was thrilled about all of her presents, and tore through them in typical four year old fashion. She did remember to say thank you, and she's been playing with all of them non-stop. Of course, there was a pretty predominant princess theme in her gifts from family & friends!

Bye bye holidays!

I can't believe I have only ONE day of summer holidays left! I'm ready to be back at work, but the summer sure has gone by quickly. I'm hoping for a nice long fall!

Ralph was on holidays last week. We had talked about going away, but decided that we all could use some home time before the craziness of the school year begins. Luckily we had great weather, so we did lots of swimming! The kids have been having so much fun at the pool. G has been very determined to swim in deep water, and he's been having some success. L has become independent and very enthusiastic about the big waterslide. One afternoon she spent over an hour going down the slide. She can even "swim" to the ladder on her own. M is our one child who has been in love with water from day one. She is a little fish. She goes under the water, jumps into the water, and splashes like crazy!

Other highlights from the past week:

Going to the field to visit Grandpa -- a ride in the combine, pretending to drive the semi, and learning all about air horns :-)

Visiting the Penners on the field -- going for a ride in the John Deere (G even wore his John Deere t-shirt for the occasion), loving all of the GPS system, and getting to apply the brake on the combine

I think this is the time of year when Ralph and I both miss farming. Harvest season is a lot of work, but it's also a lot of fun!

Sunday we went to a family gathering. It was good to see family that we haven't seen since Easter. It was REALLY hot, so I was grateful that my cousin had filled her kiddie pool! Another one of my cousins brought his quad with him. G loved the ride!

Bad Blogger

You'd really think that I'd take some extra time to keep my blog more current when I actually have the extra time... but that's proving not to be the case this summer! So, this begins a super long post, updating a very busy few weeks in our home.

Lots of changes going on for these two lately! M has started talking like crazy... still single words, but she's learning new words every day. Some of her words are: poop, fart, giraffe, mommy, daddy, Nita, grandma, grandpa, milk, more, outside, sun, tree, bird, eat, ball, train, and so on.

We found out about a week ago that L will need to have surgery to correct her reflux this summer. The procedure will be a fairly non-invasive day surgery, with a quick recovery time, but she will need to be anaesthesized. We were pretty surprised by the news, since it's been a few months since she had an infection (which is the reason for correcting her reflux). I'm glad that the problem will be corrected, but I am a little worried about how she's going to react to the anaesthetic.

We've spent the past two weeks at swimming lessons every morning for the older two kids. M tolerated being stuck in her stroller better than I anticipated (I'm sure all the snacks didn't hurt). I'm so proud of how much G and L both accomplished. They both learned a lot, but they'll need to repeat their levels next year. By the end of their lessons, L was going all the way under the water (with help), floating (with help), and jumping into the pool & G was doing bobs, jumping into the pool on his own, and trying really hard to swim. Swimming isn't easy for him. He has a really hard time managing water in his face, and swimming requires so many body parts to move together at the same time, while you remember to breathe. I'm so proud of how hard he worked, and how much he did learn...but 10 days is just not long enough for his body to really learn what it needs to do. So, we'll keep working on it! L was thrilled to have three friends in her swimming class, and she often spent more time playing and talking than actually learning how to swim, but she had fun... and she learned some new things.

We've also had some fun summer events, like our annual "festival". The kids had hours of fun on the inflatables, loved the petting zoo, and had fun at the parade! It was a beautiful weekend, not too hot, but nice enough to go swimming! Our long weekend was rainy, so we decided to go to the Children's Museum for the afternoon. Everyone really enjoyed it! G loved the skate park (after discovering how cool BMX is through computer games & an exhibition during the festival)! I think L was a little scared of it!

We've also made one, short, attempt at removing G's training wheels. He started out excited, and ended up crying and completely uninterested in trying after his first fall. We really need to find a way to help him learn how to balance on a bike before we try to get him to balance AND steer AND pedal at the same time! Sometimes, we just don't realize how many actions need to be coordinated at once in so many of this activities.... so we took a step back and decided that a better place to start working toward this goal is raising his training wheels.

This weekend, we celebrated our 10th Anniversary, and my birthday! Paul & Nita asked if all three of our kids could stay with them for the weekend, so we spent our anniversary weekend alone! It was a little lonely, but it was also a real treat to have some extra time to spend together! We went to 529 Wellington for supper on Friday, and it was amazing! Saturday, we painted a bedroom, and then went golfing and for supper with some great friends. Today, we went for another round of golf before picking the kids up. I sure missed them, but it was really nice to spend some time together... a good reminder of all the reasons that we're good together (aside from being a good parenting team).
